My Story

November 15, 2009

Tripawds is a user-supported community. Thank you for your support!

My name is Corgan and just recently became a tripawd on October 6th, 2009. I was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in my right ilium (pelvis).

I had 30% of my right pelvis removed and my right hind leg amputated. After a successful surgery I developed a highly resistant infection requiring a 23 day stay at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

During my stay I was implanted with a vacuum device to constantly draw fluid out of my wound. My bandages and vacuum were changed every two or three days; each time having a bacteria culture taken.

My infection, Enterobacter, has been highly resistant to over nearly 20 different antibiotics. The vacuum device has helped from keeping the infection becoming systemic. The bacteria still shows sensitivity to Imipenem, so as a method to get me home with my pawrents and hopefully clear the bacteria, special antibiotic beads were implanted into my wound cavity. The hope is that the concentration of antibiotics in the wound area will be strong enough to clear the infection.

I’m currently at home recovering with my pawrents. I was bed ridden for three weeks so I am very weak and require assistance via a “Blue Dog Help ’em Up” to get up, go outside and start to walk again.

I’m not quite out of the woods yet (which is a bad idiom considering that I love running around in the mountains on Pennsylvania), but my pawrents are doing all they can to make sure I get the best treatment available.

With all the help from the wonderful doctors at the University of Penn’s Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital, family and friends prayers and my pawrents, I’m hopeful we can beat this infection.
